The starship <I>Enterprise</I> arrives at the planet Exo III to search for missing exobiologist Doctor Roger Korby, a mission particularly important to Nurse Christine Chapel, Doctor McCoy's chief nurse - and Korby's fiancée. She is overjoyed when they make contact with the noted scientist, who requests that only she and Captain Kirk beam down to the planet to meet him. Korby now lives in an underground cavern built by 'The Old Ones', the long-dead inhabitants of the planet, which he discovered five years ago while suffering from severe frostbite. One of his companions, a giant named Ruk, is an android created long ago by the extinct aliens; Korby has since used the Old Ones' technology to create Andrea, a beautiful 'woman' who amazes Kirk and Chapel with her life-like appearance. Chapel also recognises Korby's aide, Doctor Brown, but is surprised by his failure to recognise her - until she and Kirk discover that he too is an android. Korby is now insane, and he reveals his plan to replace key Federation personnel with android duplicates. He takes Kirk prisoner and creates an android so perfect that it even fools Nurse Chapel. This 'Kirk' then returns to the <I>Enterprise</I>, and takes control of the ship - unless Spock can determine that his commanding officer is a fake, Korby's mad plan for domination will succeed...
